CEFR Levels Explained – A1 to C2
The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) categorizes language proficiency into six levels: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, and C2. These levels help learners and educators understand language ability in a structured way.
Beginner Levels
A1 – Beginner
Basic understanding of everyday expressions and simple phrases. Can introduce oneself and ask simple questions.
A2 – Elementary
Can communicate in routine situations, understand common expressions, and describe personal background.
Intermediate Levels
B1 – Intermediate
Can handle everyday conversations, understand clear standard language, and write simple connected texts.
B2 – Upper Intermediate
Can understand complex texts, interact with native speakers fluently, and produce clear, detailed writing.
Advanced Levels
C1 – Advanced
Can express ideas fluently, understand demanding texts, and use language flexibly in social, academic, and professional settings.
C2 – Proficient
Can understand virtually everything heard or read, express ideas precisely, and differentiate finer shades of meaning.
